Thumbs Up is looking for Board Members
Thumbs Up – Hitchhiking 15000 kilometers across Africa for a sustainable future.
In the summer of 2012 six couples will hitchhike from Groningen to South Africa, for a sustainable future. During this event the couples will get in contact with locals and their views and experience on sustainability in its comprehensiveness as written down in the Earth Charter - a declaration of fundamental ethical principles for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global society in the 21st century.
What is Thumbs Up?
Thumbs Up is an initiative which is currently in the process to be registered as a non-profit foundation located in Groningen. It is a foundation which is intended to operate under the wings of the Dutch United Nations Association (DUNSA) of Groningen. The goal of the Thumbs Up Foundation is to organize and implement a hitchhike project in the summer of 2012.
Six couples will hitchhike from the Netherlands to South Africa in a period of three months. An unprecedented 15000 kilometres journey across the continent of Africa in which the hitchhikers will travel through a total of sixteen countries (five countries in Europe and eleven countries in Africa).
Through this event, funds and awareness will be raised for the Earth Charter – a declaration of fundamental ethical principles for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global society in the 21st century. The values and principles of the Charter need more international recognition and acknowledgement. Next to the funds and awareness raising, the hitchhikers will both visit projects and undertake projects themselves along the route which are all related to the Earth Charter.
Where are we now?
A project group of Thumbs Up has written a comprehensive project plan which describes the route, activities, safety and security issues, fundraising, promotion, and finances of the project. Thumbs Up is in regular contact with the Earth Charter Initiative and has made initial contact with Deepeei Film Productions, a production company interested in documenting the event. Currently, Thumbs Up is looking for board members to complement the existing board.
