Sri Lanka, pursuit of justice for the Tamils

Geplaatst op: 10-03-2011 20:00

The civil war between the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) and the Government of Sri Lanka, came to an end in May 2009. The end of the civil war is recognized as a ‘war without witnesses’. Due to this fact, the genocide committed against Tamils in Northern Sri Lanka is difficult to prove. The Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) is a political formation, whose aims are among others to prosecute those who have committed genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

At present the Tamil people have absolutely no political space for articulating their political aspirations or for exercising their fundamental rights in their homeland. The Sri Lankan government is strangling the Tamil people’s aspirations and their political rights through legal impediments and military occupation. In this context the Tamil Diaspora, which is an integral part of the nation of Tamil Eelam, utilizing democratic means in their respective countries, establishes the TGTE as the highest political entity to campaign for the realization of the Tamil’s rights to self-determination.

In the third NGIZ lecture on peace versus justice, Dr. Murugavel will elaborate on the genocide of Tamils in Sri Lankan and the workings and foundations of the TGTE in their pursuit for justice. Dr. Murugavel is an elected member of the TGTE and helped to establish ‘Stop the Genocide of Tamils’ and led the campaign ‘ Free the Tamils’ in the UK. The Prime Minister of the TGTE (Mr. Rudrakumar) will deliver the keynote address at the opening session by videoconference.
